By now, even those of you living under a rock should have heard of the Coexist campaign. If you haven’t, you may have seen their logo as a bumper sticker or a button or something. Usually, it looks something like this: I’ve been seeing a lot of these stickers around, and I decided to check it out today. It’s a pretty noble concept. This, the most simplified version of the logo, only shows the symbols of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity (in that order). There are a lot of different versions that people have made themselves.

I rather like this one. I’m not sure why. It’s just…different. Islam, Hindu, Judaism, peace, Taoism/Confucianism, Christianity.

This one is also very common for bumper stickers. Islam, peace, male/female, Judaism, Wicca/Pagan/Bah’ai (my apologies if I spelled that wrong), Taoism/Confucianism.

This one has the explanations underneath, but they might be a little hard to read. Islam, Buddhism, Science, Judaism, Paganism, Wiccan, Christian. I like how this one shows how science and religion can coexist as well as regular religions. They don’t have to be two completely separate entities in our lives. I’ll get more into that later.

Very similar to the previous one, but it switches Pagan and Buddhism.

As you can see, they’re all a little different, but they all carry the same message. Religious (and scientific) peace and tolerance. But what if we took it into more than just religion? What if we could have every part of our lives in coexistance?

Science and religion.

Mathematics and art.

Nature and technology.

The past and the future.

Hell, maybe even Microsoft and Apple.

…No, not Microsoft and Apple. Some healthy competition is good. Even if it results in gladiatorial fights to the death.

But, really.  Why shouldn’t we?  Peace and balance are good.  Equilibrium.  Homeostasis.  It’s all good stuff.  And now I sound like a hippie naming off drugs.  Damn.

  1. I have the blue one. I love the message: peace & tolerance. Although many religious people would see it differently. They see their own religion as the only way to heaven. Naturally, they are concerned for other people and wish only for the eternal salvation of these others.

  2. The key is in your words: ‘their own religion’. A similar oxymoron is the phrase ‘my love’.

  3. Such optimistic thoughts. I wish we could all co-exist, but some of us simply are intolerant. I don’t know why, it seems if you don’t agree with them they have no choice but to attack, verbally or physically.

What a world we live in.

  4. […] or a button or something. Usually, it looks something like this: I??ve been seeing a lot of thes veterans seek grave symbolsRelatives of dead soldiers, including one killed in Iraq, are […]

  5. One of the ones doesn’t want to “coexist.” I don’t even need to tell you which one! It’s the one with nearly daily explosions: I wish we could coexist too. Jesus says, “if your enemy makes you go with him one mile, go with him two.” I believe that Christianity IS the only way to heaven, but Christians aren’t the ones spanning the globe with daily bombs against those who don’t believe the same way. But the religion who’s name MEANS “submit” doesn’t have any verses in their holy book that say “live and let live.” I’m sure you can guess which one, and I haven’t even said the name here!! How sensitive of me. I guess Im pretty good at “coexisting” More at

  6. I like this campaign. This is the first time I’ve seen science included with religion and I appreciate it. Life was created with more than one race, more than one culture, etc.; so there must be more than one religion. As my good friend puts it, when done with work or school at the end of the day, if there can be more than one way to get home again, then there is more than one path to follow to get to enlightenment or heaven or the afterlife.

  7. Paul… you are giving a great example of NOT coexisting, with your comment about the religion with the daily bombs??? i think you don’t really understand what this IDEA is about!!
I don’t want to start with a list of incidents and historical facts of what Christians did ‘bad’, starting with the very origin of the religion, because i believe that making accusations doesn’t help and is not the point here!!
perhaps tolerance starts with forgiving and that is something people like you who divides and accuse will never learn…
start over, Paul, it’s not too late!

  8. Wow! This is an amazing concept! I have seen a lot of stickers and shirts with coexist on it so I decided to do a little research! It warms my heart to see people making the effort to improve the way we all relate to each other. I respect everyone’s opinion and feel that this is a huge step toward peace. Everyone has a right to be happy.

Happiness is a journey, not a destination.

  9. In response to paulrevere2:
How can you say that an entire religion is against peace? It is a few extremists within that religion, and this is true for everything in life. Take a look at Hitler- he was Christian. Your bible may speak of peace, but it also speaks of war, “Beat your plowshares into swords…” Joel 3:10 Many religions, including the 5 main religions of the world, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam and Christianity, all have to golden rule: “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

And for my original reason for responding:
The forth one down, the one with the labels underneath, calls Taoism “Buddhism.” It’s kind of disappointing, especially since the purpose is for coexistence.

  10. You really should not include Christianity and Judaism in this all-inclusive mix, because it misrepresents Biblical teachings. The Bible teaches very clearly that there is only one God revered by both Jews and Christians. And to imply that there are many paths to the same God completely undermines those basic Biblical teachings.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech” – U.S. Constitution

  11. i am totally dedicated to that idea!!!!!!!!! my backroiund is a coexist sign so is my aim icon

  12. I would like to point out that Paul Revere that plenty of people kill in the name of Christianity and Judaism, and not just Islam. In fact, even Buddhists and Hindus have killed each other, and they are by far the most peaceful among the religions. The point of this campaign, and logo, and this person’s post is that some of us are not fanatics. I have had friends of every faith, and I can tell you first-hand that there are peaceful and violent people of every age, gender, race, religion, etc.. Get over yourself. By the way, your namesake, Paul Revere, was just the first of many Americans to rally the poor to fight and die to make the rich richer. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

  13. this is horseshit!

  14. re: kelly johnson’s comment “this is horseshit” … kelly, with an attitude like that, you are part of the problem. i suggest that we take people with your attitude, of all faiths, and put them on an island together with no food and give each a big rock and a sharp stick, and let god/karma/whatever sort it out…

  15. I LOVE this whole concept … there’s absolutely NO reason why ALL religions AND science can’t coexist peacefully. Would it be possible to include a Baha’i star (9 points … and by the way has NOTHING to do with Wicca) which is almost round in place of the Peace symbol … because I’m thinking that once we are able to combine as many religions as possible that’s a giant leap toward bringing about peace. I know, I hate to leave out the peace symbol, but short of lengthening the word, I can’t think of another way to be more inclusive.
And it’s not the religions themselves that are divisive, but only misguided followers thereof.

  16. markbaland: i think kelly johnson was jk. cuz thts a quote from Step Brothers. the whole quote wud be, “This wedding is horseshit!”

but i pretty much agree w/everyone except paul revere. ur a dumbass. tht fuckin link u put in there is the most hypocritical site ive ever seen in my life. christianity in itself isnt the worst of religions in my opinion, just the ppl who “believe” in it and totally misrepresent christianity like the islamic extremists tht make up less than 1% of the muslim population. my uncles a muslim and he married a mormen! (my dad’s sister). so fuck off w/ur christianity bullshit

  17. ATTN: rockisgreat

I am not a dumbass. I have an IQ of 135. You have poor grammar and spelling skills. Also, your argument, while emotionally compelling with it’s “fuck off” and “bullshit” points, ultimately lacks any convincing logic. When your parents pick you up from day care, ask if they can get you an English tutor. Have a nice day! 🙂

  18. loved your article!! especially the way you finished it!

  19. Hey check it out … if someone like that calls you a “dumbass” in a message that reads the way his does, consider it a compliment. This is obviously a teenager rebel mentality. You’re clearly an adult. Just hope he figures it out before he grows any older. SO not even worth a response!
